Reports suggest that Ruben Amorim, the new manager of Manchester United, is aiming to strengthen his squad in the upcoming January transfer window by targeting a key defensive player from one of his former club’s rivals.
Amorim, who is working to implement his preferred 3-4-3 formation, is facing initial challenges as he adapts to the team left by Erik ten Hag.
Following a notable Europa League victory over Bodo/Glimt, where Rasmus Hojlund played a vital role, Amorim, aged 39, is quickly assessing his squad before the transfer window opens. He is exploring recruitment options with the support of the club’s INEOS-backed sporting department.
While previously linked with a move for Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres, Amorim is now eyeing Benfica’s 22-year-old defender, Tomas Araujo, with a potential £50m deal in the works. Araujo, a highly-rated rising star, has been a key player for Benfica this season, featuring in 13 matches across various competitions and impressing with his 6ft 2in frame.
Amorim, who has been closely monitoring Araujo’s progress, believes the defender possesses the qualities necessary for the demands of the Premier League. This potential signing could raise questions about the future of current United defenders, including Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans, Matthijs de Ligt, Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof, and youngster Leny Yoro.
Araujo, considered one of Benfica’s top youth prospects in recent years, has an £83m release clause in his contract, reflecting his potential and national team involvement.
United, aiming to align with Financial Fair Play regulations, may look to negotiate a lower fee and potentially sell players to fund the move.
