What happened?
According to The Sun, United are keen on bringing Gomes back to Old Trafford after selling him to Lille in 2020. The club’s recruitment department are thought to believe that the playmaker may be an asset to new manager Ruben Amorim, who has long admired the 24-year-old, although they may face competition from Tottenham.
Gomes’ contract expires at the end of the season, allowing him to negotiate pre-contract talks with overseas teams beginning in January, and United hope to entice him back with the possibility of being Casemiro’s long-term midfield successor. The fact that he would cost nothing is, of course, likely to be a motivator, and Gomes has previously confessed that it would be “difficult” to turn down a return request.
Did you know?
Gomes only made 10 first-team appearances for United before moving to Lille, but he has since become a star in France, making 129 appearances and representing England under interim coach Lee Carsley.
WHAT IS NEXT?
Gomes will play his next game against Rennes for Lille on Sunday. The club presently ranks fourth in Ligue 1.
