Liverpool took advantage of Manchester City’s loss of points to take the Premier League lead.

Liverpool will go to Wolves in the latest match on Saturday’s schedule for round 6 of the 2024-2025 Premier League, a team that has not won since the start of the season. 

Earlier, Manchester City drew with Newcastle, therefore a win would put Liverpool on top of the standings.

Coach Arne Slot’s team did not have much possession in this match (55%), and they only had two more shots than the home team (10 to 8), but they had obvious chances. 
However, during the official playing time of the first half, whether finishing from outside the penalty area or right at the 5m50 line, the red shirt players were unable to defeat custodian Sam Johnstone.

It wasn’t until the second minute of injury time in the first half that Ibrahima Konate broke the deadlock, jumping high to meet Diogo Jota’s cross and heading it in to open the score. 

Leading, but after the break, Liverpool equalised in the 56th minute due to defensive indecision. 

However, only 5 minutes later, the Kop recovered the lead. Nelson Semedo brought down Jota in the penalty area, and the referee whistled the penalty. Mohamed Salah seized the opportunity to score his fourth goal in the 2024-2025 Premier League.

That was also the goal that secured Liverpool’s 2-1 victory and earned them three points. Liverpool will play their next match at Crystal Palace. 

After six matches, the port city team has 15 points, putting them first in the rankings, one point ahead of Manchester City and Arsenal, who defeated Leicester City 4-2. 

Chelsea also won 4-2 over Brighton and is currently ranked fourth with 13 points.
