Chiesa joined Liverpool from Juventus in the summer on a four-year contract after being told by coach Thiago Motta that he was not in his future plans. The Italy international made his Liverpool debut as a substitute in the midweek Champions League triumph over AC Milan, and he made his first appearance at Anfield on Saturday, coming off the bench in the 3-0 win over Bournemouth.
Chiesa faces a tough battle to break into the first team due to the presence of Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, Diogo Jota, and Darwin Nunez, but he will be looking for his first start after impressing in his first minutes for the Reds. The Italian thinks it was a “relief” to play at Anfield on Saturday, especially because the home team won convincingly.
He told the club’s media: “Hearing ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ for the first time from the bench was incredible. It was incredible against Nottingham Forest, although we regretfully lost, but today was just great. I relished every moment of it.
“I remember I played seven minutes in Milan, which isn’t much, but I was overjoyed to make my debut against them. Today, all I had to do was be prepared, and when the coach told me to play, I was overjoyed. It was also a comfort because I had longed to play here at Anfield.”
Chiesa might make his first start for Liverpool against West Ham in the Carabao Cup third round. Arne Slot may want to rotate his lineup for the encounter at Anfield, giving Chiesa the opportunity to stake a claim for a starting berth.
