After getting back together at Old Trafford, Danny Simpson hinted about a three-on-three boxing match against Wayne Rooney and Phil Bardsley.
After leaving from football, Simpson—who won the Premier League championship with Leicester in 2016—turned to boxing.
He drew with YouTuber Danny Aarons in his maiden fight, which took place in Dublin as the main event of Misfits Boxing, over four rounds.
However, Simpson returned to the pitch for a charity match with former Manchester United and Celtic players one week later.
Playing alongside Bardsley and Rooney, he set the stage for a group boxing match.
Simpson shared a photo of himself with the two and wrote: “Before our game @manchesterunitedfoundation, I’m picking up some boxing tips from these 2 superstars. Who wants to play 3 against 3 lol?
Simpson, a former United teammate of Rooney during his heyday at Old Trafford, lined up alongside the former England captain in a matchup against former Celtic players.
Even though Rooney, 38, hit an incredible free kick, Celtic won the decisive penalty shootout and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
The Manchester United star was also in surprising discussions to face the Misfits, but after accepting the Plymouth post, he turned his attention to management.
When he was younger, he boxed, and in a drunken kitchen spar, Bardsley famously knocked him out. Later, in a celebration, he made fun of himself.
Misfits – co-founded by YouTuber-turned-boxer KSI and his manager Mams Taylor – welcomes celebrity-style crossover bouts.
And Simpson was the first former footballer to make the move – but he revealed others are tempted to do the same.
He said: “I’m not going to say the names now, I’ve had a few people messaging me last few days. Hopefully they’ll be more now after seeing that.
“I had a lot of lads from Leicester in the WhatsApp group so hopefully everyone’s seen it and hopefully they fancy it and they can all come along.”
