Thanks to his most recent YouTube video, in which he picked the player he believes to be his finest ever, Cristiano Ronaldo might have offended several of his former teammates.
Alongside some of the greatest players in history, Ronaldo has had successful stints at Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus, and the Portuguese national team.
The 39-year-old made one particularly controversial choice, though, when he passed on former Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema in favour of a player he had never collaborated with.
In the video, Ronaldo’s old Manchester United teammate Rio Ferdinand asked him to choose which of the two players he thought was superior.
Ferdinand began by asking Ronaldo to select between Paul Scholes and Gary Neville, two legendary United players.
This instance demonstrates why Mikel Arteta was so keen to have Raya at Arsenal because of his distribution talents.
It was not surprising that Ronaldo chose Scholes over Neville, considering his previous high appreciation for the midfielder.
Ronaldo continued to pick David Beckham over the red-headed midfield dynamo, but he still favoured Scholes over players like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Carlos Tevez.
After Ronaldo chose Ryan Giggs over Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria, Beckham was left off the team.
More of Ronaldo’s Madrid teammates, such as Sergio Ramos, Pepe, Marcelo, Xabi Alonso, Toni Kroos, and even Javier Hernandez, were quickly named by Ferdinand; still, Ronaldo consistently chose Giggs.
But Giggs’ success was short-lived as Ronaldo choose Benzema ahead of him.
Ronaldo’s most revealing response, though, came with his following response.
Ferdinand challenged Ronaldo to choose between Kylian Mbappe, another French sensation, and Benzema.
Unexpectedly, Ronaldo chose Mbappe over Benzema.
Considering that Ronaldo and Benzema played in 342 games together, it is a bit surprising.
In addition, Benzema is the winner of the Ballon d’Or, which he took home in 2022 after finishing far ahead of Sadio Mane in second place. That season, Benzema led both La Liga and the Champions League in scoring.
Over the course of his career, Ronaldo has only encountered Mbappe five times; the other three encounters have taken place on the international scene, while the other two have taken place at PSG.
But it seems that Ronaldo was so affected by those matches that he decided to declare Mbappe superior to Benzema.
