Raffaele Palladino, the Fiorentina manager, benched David De Gea after just one game.
The Serie A team signed the former Manchester United custodian earlier this month, but he had a terrible debut. For Fiorentina’s Serie A match against Venezia on Sunday, De Gea was benched, and Pietro Terracciano took his position in goal. For Palladino’s team, Terracciano continued to play goalless in a draw.
Just three days prior, De Gea made his Fiorentina debut in the Conference League against Puskas Akademia of Hungary, when he gave up two goals early on. The game concluded in a 3-3 draw, and this Thursday is the second leg. Fiorentina’s advancement to the league stage of this season’s competition is guaranteed with a win.
After leaving Manchester United at the end of the 2022–2023 season, De Gea was without a club for more than a year. He then signed a one-year contract with Fiorentina, with the option for an additional year. The 33-year-old played 545 games for the Red Devils while he was in England, and he took home eight major awards, including the Premier League championship.
