Paul Scholes declares that the ‘unprofessional’ star who joined Man United ‘couldn’t kick a football’ and calls him the team’s worst-ever acquisition

Paul Scholes, whose former team was humiliated 3-0 by Liverpool on Sunday, has dubbed Manchester United’s worst signing ever.

Under Sir Alex Ferguson, the Red Devils legend won a plethora of medals, including 11 Premier League crowns, three FA Cups, and two Champions Leagues during his illustrious two decades at Old Trafford.

In a discussion sparked by fans, Scholes discussed the finest and worst signings in Manchester United’s history with journalist David Ornstein and former player Jamie Carragher. He began by gushing over the impact Eric Cantona and Wayne Rooney had on the team.

He arrived for an eye-watering £85m following Ten Hag's move from Ajax

Arne Slot’s Liverpool soundly defeated the Red Devils at Old Trafford, marking the most recent stain on United’s history since Scholes’ 2013 retirement from the game.

Because of the disappointing loss, a fan proposed that Antony is the worst Manchester United signing ever. The Brazilian was not utilised as a substitute during Sunday’s match and has only managed to score 11 goals and provide five assists since moving from Ajax for £85 million back in 2022.

Offering a different view, Scholes told The Overlap’s Fan Debate, brought to you by Sky Bet: ‘You know what, I was going to go a bit further back than that.

‘(Juan Sebastian) Veron was a good player, a great player in Europe and I’m not sure why it didn’t work out for him.

“It will always be challenging to replace Peter Schmeichel, so let me go back to the goalkeepers.”

“I’m thinking more like (Massimo) Taibi, Mark Bosnich, but Fabian Barthez was great too.” Mark, I felt he was a good keeper at Villa. He was really unprofessional when he came to us. To be honest, it was absurd.

“You usually have fifteen to twenty minutes for shooting practice. After three shots, he was exhausted.” I was unaware that he was incapable of kicking a football! I had never seen anything like it, to be honest.

“None of us noticed it when we played Everton away in the first game of the season—he was unable to cross the halfway line.” Plus, there was no breeze, making it the ideal day.

“And then you notice that he has size 14 feet.” He was merely kicking the floor, to be honest. Letdown.

The ex-England star played down any idea that Juan Sebastian Veron (right) is United's worst ever signing: 'He was a great player in Europe and I'm not sure why it didn't work out for him'
