Virgil van Dijk is the sole Liverpool player named to the PFA Team of the Year for 2024.

The Dutchman is one of several Manchester City and Arsenal stars, joining Ollie Watkins as the only two players from teams outside of last season’s top two.

Van Dijk was once again a talismanic figure at the heart of Liverpool’s defence during Jurgen Klopp’s final season in charge. The worth of the Dutchman’s leadership was demonstrated in plenty as his glancing header in the dying stages of the Carabao Cup sent the travelling Kop into scenes of jubilation at Wembley Stadium as an injured Liverpool team buried Chelsea.

Last season, the centre defender helped Liverpool finish third in the Champions League. He appeared in 36 Premier League games for the Reds last season, scoring twice.

The defender, who joined Liverpool in 2018 for a then-record £75 million, was named to his fourth PFA team of the year, reflecting the Dutchman’s meteoric rise on Merseyside. Van Dijk will be looking to lead his club to more big titles this season after taking over as captain of Liverpool from Jordan Henderson last summer. He has already raised the trophy once.
