HARRY AMASS: Manchester United supporters should keep his nаme in mind as he is vying for a starting spot in the first team at Old Trafford.
Amass has shown throughout his US trip that he is more than capable, so the worries about what the team will do without Luke Shaw may be put to rest.
The Londoner, 17, went through Watford’s system before United paid them a fee to take the highly-regarded player to Carrington. In February of last year, he was called up to the first team and was benched for the FA Cup match against Liverpool. He has also played for England at the under-15, under-16, and under 16 levels. However, his true goal is to play for the first team at Old Trafford.
Given the injuries that Shaw and Tyrell Malacia have had, he has a chance to succeed there and help United save money on transfers in the process.Against Arsenal and Real Betis during this US Tour’s preseason, he looked and feels ready.
Amass said: “Anything can happen at any time. Injuries come about and you’ve just got to take your chance when it comes.
“This pre-season is a chance to prove that if I am picked I can do it. Obviously we’ll see what happens when Luke and Tyrell come back.
“My intention is to play first-team football at this club.
“I think if the opportunity comes, I’ve got to take it with both hands, it could change my career. I am just waiting for that moment, I am ready.”
Amass is an all action full-back much in the mould of Shaw and provided the assist for Amad’s goal in the 3-2 win over Real Betis.
He said: “On the ball I am comfortable, I like to dribble a lot, I like to take on players, I like to excite the fans, play exciting football.
“On the ball, in the build-up, ain’t a problem.
“Obviously it’s off the ball you’ve got to work hard, make sure you’re at it 100 per cent.”
The 5ft9 rising star is not afraid to stick his foot in either.
“You simply need to demonstrate your аggressive side. You may be younger and smaller than your opponent, but you still need to show that you are a threаt and won’t back down,” he stated. After that, you can play a fun game.
He has also quickly come to terms with a rejuvenated Marcus Rashford down the left, something the teenager attributes to his teammate’s skill.
He declared: “He is an amazing player, it’s easy to play on the wing with him. Playing with him makes it ten times easier.”
“Link-up play, he grasps my game immediately and gets it.”
Given his self-assurance and skill, it’s hardly surprising that Shaw, who missed out on playing for United because of an ιnjury in February, is already being compared to him.
“It is a good comparison,” Amass remarked. Among the Premier League’s greatest left-backs, if not the best for a while, in my opinion.
Therefore, I won’t be whining about the comparison.
In his two years at United, Erik ten Hag has proven adept at developing young players, as seen with Alejandro Garnacho, Diallo, and Kobbie Mainoo. He is optimistic that he will accomplish the same with Amass.
“We all see potential here like where we have seen in previous years, like Garnacho last season,” Ten Hag remarked.
“Kobbie and I experienced it in the previous season.
“He is not that far away now at this moment. If we train him well, if we coach him well, then in three months it’s possible that he can be on that point.
“In this moment he needs to catch up and he has to develop some skills to play for Manchester United, competing for the highest positions in the league.
“But with big talent it can go up very quickly and that is very interesting to see if he is capable of doing this.”
A packed Old Trafford might soon be finding out just how capable he is.
Harry Amass, remember the nаme.
