After agreeing to a five-year contract, Riccardo Calafiori joined the team today in Philadelphia.
The 22-year-old Bologna defender, who can also play left back, is the subject of a move reportedly worth £42 million.
It is the first summer signing for Mikel Arteta’s team and puts an end to weeks of rumours linking the Italian to the Gunners.
Last season, Calafiori was a vital member of Bologna’s squad that qualified for the Champions League for the first time in sixty years.
After that, he excelled during Italy’s Euro 2024 campaign, starting each of their three group stage games.
Calafiori stood up to give a brief greeting to his new teammates after his arrival was formally introduced to them at a squad meeting at Arsenal’s team hotel.
He said, “I’m really happy to be here, of course.” “I waited a long time.”
“Hopefully, we’ll accomplish something outstanding this year.” Only this. I’m grateful.
Soon after the briefing, the adaptable addition gave Arteta a heartfelt hug and was seen on camera enquiring, “Is this real?”
“It’s real,” a grinning Arteta replied. It is true. At last, it’s authentic.
Calafiori, who scored two goals and racked up five assists in 30 games for Bologna in the Italian top division last season, was hailed as a “great signing” by Arteta.
“Riccardo has a strong personality and character, and his unique skills will help us push for major trophies,” Arteta continued.
“He has demonstrated remarkable growth in his performances for Bologna and Italy, with his advancement and development over the last year truly remarkable.”
“We are excited to collaborate with Riccardo, assimilate him into the team, and provide him with ongoing support in the years to come.”
Before the transfer window shuts on August 30, more moves are anticipated as Arteta aims to enhance his team in preparation for a rematch with the Premier League championship.
The agreement comes after goalie David Raya’s loan contract’s option-to-buy provision was activated earlier this month.
