AUSTIN, Texas, July 20, 2017 NBA All-Star Kevin Durant surprised children at IDEA Rundberg in Austin on Thursday. The Summer of Opportunity project, run by BBVA Compass, encourages people to pay it forward by doing random acts of kindness.
The youngsters were attending a basketball clinic at the school’s outdoor basketball court, which opened last year as a collaborative effort between the BBVA Compass Foundation and the Kevin Durant Charity Foundation’s Build It and They Will Ball court rehabilitation program. The clinic was led by educators from the Austin area’s Kevin Durant Youth Basketball Fantasy ProCamp, a two-day event for youth that started on Thursday. The clinic and camp are both being presented by BBVA Compass.
Kevin Durant said, “It’s wonderful to return to IDEA Rundberg today with BBVA Compass and see how this court is being put to such good use.” Here, the pupils can design their futures and lead spacious, vibrant lives. It is a privilege to be able to make a meaningful difference in people’s everyday lives in Austin.
Durant is making his first trip to Austin on Thursday, following his victory in the NBA Finals in June and his designation as the series MVP.
In June, employees at BBVA Compass across the board gave away $25 gift cards to the people and organizations of their choosing as part of the bank’s Summer of Opportunity initiative. One of the brand ambassadors the bank enlisted to help promote its summertime drive to spread joy and give back to the communities it calls home was Durant.
IDEA board member and BBVA Compass’s Texas community relations executive Yolanda Davila said, “This event today puts an exclamation point on our commitment to Austin.” “It’s great to have such a great role model as Kevin join us during our Summer of Opportunity to help bring attention to those efforts and create such an amazing opportunity for the IDEA students. We are out there every day helping families build their futures and get into affordable homes.”
The BBVA Compass Foundation supports the bank’s goal of being an engine of opportunity by expanding access to affordable housing and education, among other things. The foundation granted $100,000 to the IDEA Rundberg court. The court is a powerful illustration of the bank’s dedication to Austin and the capacity of the private sector to address budgetary deficits. IDEA Rundberg is a charter school that, in contrast to traditional public schools, obtains approximately 75% of its funding from federal and state sources and depends on private donations to pay for its facilities.
On the Austin Rundberg campus, IDEA’s Academy and College Prep schools educate about seven hundred children. The school is a component of the growing network of charter schools that make up IDEA Public Schools, which serves over 36,000 students throughout the state. For the previous eleven years, every IDEA alumnus, including those from Ivy League schools and other prominent universities, has been accepted to college without fail.
According to Taylor Nichols, principal of IDEA Rundberg College Prep, “We are marshaling all of the resources we can to help us achieve that.” Our goal is to provide the bright young people who enter our doors with all they require to have bright futures. “We’re honored to be able to support that objective with such devoted partners as Kevin Durant and BBVA Compass.”
