Captain Kevin De Bruyne of the Belgian national team could not hide his disappointment with the shocking defeat to Slovakia in the opening match of the EURO 2024 finals.
Slovakia suddenly took the lead in the 7th minute after Ivan Schranz’s successful rebound. In the rest of the match, striker Romelu Lukaku put the ball into Slovakia’s net twice but were both denied by VAR technology, once for offside and once because of Openda’s handball.
Although the “Red Devils” are no longer rated as highly as before, they are still expected to win easily against the team considered the weakest in the group, Slovakia. After the defeat with a minimal score, captain midfielder Kevin De Bruyne appeared extremely angry and gave harsh assessments of the entire team’s performance.
However, after answering a few questions, the Manchester City attacking midfielder suddenly ended the interview in a strange way. In the interview area, the 32-year-old star answered a few questions in his native language and French before a reporter suggested: “Kevin, please say one sentence in English.” However, De Bruyne, looking annoyed and frustrated, turned and left, no longer in the mood to talk to the media.
Before leaving, De Bruyne briefly mentioned the match: “It was a shame. We played well in the first 20 minutes. We tried to equalize but failed. In the second half, we I played better and deserved a point. Our two goals were denied, we couldn’t score and that’s football.”
De Bruyne and the Belgian team will have to quickly revive their spirits to prepare for the next match in Group E against Romania. This is a match that is expected to be very difficult for Domenico Tedesco and his team as Romania got 3 points in their opening match with a convincing 3-0 win over Ukraine.
