Gareth Southgate may have been left with more questions than answers following England’s final warm-up encounter before Euro 2024.
The Three Lions welcomed Iceland to Wembley Stadium on Friday night, but despite hopes for a confidence-boosting win, they were defeated 1-0.
While Jude Bellingham missed out due to his Champions League victory with Real Madrid, and Bukayo Saka was only fit enough to sit on the bench, Southgate chose perhaps his strongest lineup.
So, what have we learned about England as they prepare to head to Germany for Euro 2024? talkSPORT.com looks into…
Gareth’s defensive challenge.
While England has had a consistent back four in each of the last four competitions, this summer will be very different.
Kyle Walker has secured the right-back position, which is wonderful news.
The bad news is that the remaining three positions continue to cause Southgate restless nights.
Luke Shaw has joined England’s 26-man team, but he will face a difficult test in proving his fitness to compete at the level necessary to flourish at Euro 2024.
Kieran Trippier has featured in both of England’s warm-up matches, but his performances have not put fans at ease.
Ezri Konsa might play there, but he could also be needed at centre-back with England’s John Stones and Marc Guehi both requiring treatment against Iceland.
Both players are anticipated to be fit, but with Jarell Quansah on standby, it is evident that England’s defensive options are limited at best, which is not ideal as you prepare for what you hope will be a month-long trip to Germany.
Is Phil Foden in risk of being dropped?
He may have been unplayable for Manchester City this season, but Phil Foden has been anything but for England.
The midfielder joined England after scoring 27 goals and contributing 12 assists for Manchester City, and many saw him as a possible star of the tournament.
Unfortunately, his effort against Iceland was anonymous, which has happened all too frequently in England’s white jersey.
Gareth Southgate didn’t sound concerned after the defeat, stating, “Phil needed the game. I’m not concerned about his performance after a few more days of training; it will come.
However, talkSPORT commentator Jim Proudfoot is not confident that he will start for England.
He stated, “I don’t know a Manchester City supporter who admires Phil Foden more than I do, but he hasn’t delivered a string of outstanding performances for England, which is a problem.
“Based on his Manchester City form, I find it unfathomable that we are even having this conversation because I believe he is a wonderful talent, but I’m not sure how we can get him into the England team.
“I just worry where he’ll end up as an impact sub, and I almost hate myself for saying it, because we see it a lot in an England shirt.
“He’s scored two international goals in over four years, and I don’t think we know how to get the most out of him.
“What you need is the best team, not the finest individuals.
“I’m just putting it out there that a more traditional left winger may benefit the club.
“I am not saying Phil Foden shouldn’t play; I am just not convinced that’s the right balance.”
With Cole Palmer and Eberechi Eze flourishing for England in the previous week, Southgate will have to make some hard decisions.
If he bases his starting XI on these warm-up games, Foden might be an unexpected absentee against Serbia.
