I’m a 31-year-old former Arsenal player who earned £18 million during my career. Too broken-hearted to do a lap of honour

Mohammed Elneany acknowledges that he was too “heartbroken” over his departure and “refused” to participate in Arsenal’s lap of honour on the last day. Having spent “the best eight years of my life” with the Gunners, the 31-year-old midfielder is one of 22 players departing this summer.

Elneny consoled teammates after their 2-1 victory over Everton at home was insufficient to prevent Manchester City from winning the Premier League.

However, he was too “full of emotion” when it came to sharing the customary end-of-season pitch circuit with the rest of the team.

Without a club now, the 101-cap Egypt’s success in the 2017 FA Cup marked the pinnacle of his career.

However, the anchorman’s later years at the Emirates were marred by injuries.

Even yet, he continued to be a fan favourite and a well-liked figure in the locker room as he made more than 150 appearances for the Gunners.

El was actually raised by Arsenal players after practice, who gathered in a circle to toss him upward in a farewell gesture.

He was beaming initially, but after the on-pitch match against the Toffees the following day, he allowed his melancholy to seep in.

The former Barcelona player, who earned almost £18 million during his career, is certain that the Gunners will always hold a special place in his heart.

Elneny stated on the official Arsenal website: “I adore this team.” I adore Arsenal in all its forms, even the supporters.

It hurts my heart, which is why I was so overcome with emotion that I declined to go out on the pitch for the lap of honour.

“But that’s life, my time here has come to an end and I’m very proud of what I’ve done for this club.

“I love these fans and I gave everything that I had. I appreciate everything they did for me, in the good moments and the bad, and they’re always going to be in my heart forever.”

Brought to Arsenal by legendary boss Arsene Wenger in 2016, Elneny dished praise on current manager Mikel Arteta.

He said: “When he was playing he was clever, and then he’s had so many good coaches he got to work with. You could see his leadership and that he could be something special.

“I’ve never seen a group of players like this. Everyone supports each other and loves each other, and works as a family. I’m going to miss them, they’ve been my friends for so long.

“We’re going to be friends forever. I’m going to be supporting them now in front of the TV and sometimes I’m going to come to the stadium to watch them.

“I’m sure they’ll have an amazing year next year as well because they deserve it.”
