Gareth Southgate says Luke Shaw is “hugely committed” to being healthy for the Euros.
Shaw and Manchester United teammate Harry Maguire are also in a battle against time to prepare for the final 26-man group that will travel to Germany this summer.
England left back Shaw is facing the most difficult uphill struggle of all, having not played since February and missing the conclusion of the season due to a setback in his recovery from a hamstring injury.
Shaw is a huge concern because England has so few left-back options, and his odds of making the plane are seen as “50-50.”
Southgate, the manager of the Three Lions, stated: “Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire had injuries at the end of the season with Manchester United, so they needed a little more work with our medical team, but they are both very committed to trying to be fit for the tournament.”
“They understand that every day is essential. We now have a clear view of where they are, which is critical. Throughout the season, we receive information from the clubs, but it is more clearer when you have the players in front of you and medics can get their hands on them and see them on the turf.
Shaw and Maguire both reported for England duty on Tuesday at Middlesbrough’s training camp, ahead of a friendly against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Newcastle on Monday. Harry Kane joined a slew of other players on Wednesday, while Manchester City and United players who competed in the FA Cup final, as well as Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham, who will play in the Champions League final, will be given extra time off.
It has opened the way for new call-ups, and Southgate has praised Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones, who he believes has made significant development this season. Adam Wharton from Crystal Palace is also in the group, but this may be for longer-term experience.
Southgate continued, “I’ve caught up with some of the boys who have had slightly different experiences over the last two years. Curtis, for example, we saw all of last summer with our U21s and he had very excellent spells this season.
“He then missed time due to injury and an unfortunate red card, and by the conclusion of the season, he had slid out of Liverpool’s squad. But we saw enough this season to get excited about what he could be able to achieve and offer to the team.”
