With Arsenal needing to raise finances to sign a few players this summer, some players are likely to be released.
Aaron Ramsdale is apparently on his way to Newcastle, and the fates of fellow homegrown players Eddie Nketiah, Reiss Nelson, and Emile Smith Rowe are also uncertain.
However, it is a midfielder, an elder statesman of the game, who may have played his final game for Arsenal on Sunday.
Partey has been a revelation in the Arsenal midfield at times, most notably providing Arteta’s side with a feeling of steel and tenacity not seen in the engine room since Patrick Vieira’s tenure.
The problem is that he has a poor fitness record, having missed 72 games in his Arsenal career to far.
Furthermore, he has been quite inconsistent since returning from injury a few weeks ago. The Ghanaian was very brilliant in Arsenal’s derby victory over Spurs, completing 93% of his passes, the highest percentage of any Arsenal starter, 100% of his dribbling attempts, and winning five ground duels.
But after that performance, he has struggled. The 30-year-old was especially awful in the 1-0 win over Manchester United eight days ago, misplacing several passes and was fortunate not to concede a penalty after diving in on Amad Diallo.
His performance against Everton on Sunday left much to be desired. Partey didn’t have much of an impact on the game, either defensively or offensively.
The former Atletico Madrid man completed 94% of his passes and had 92 touches, the second most on the field, but his possession play lacked depth and purpose.
The midfielder made no vital passes or crosses, and he didn’t dribble once. Worryingly, he was completely overrun by the Toffees’ Idrissa Gueye and Onana, with Partey losing five of six duels.
Football assigned a 5/10 match grade.According to London’s Kaya Kaynak, Partey was ‘not at his best on the ball once again’, criticizing ‘a couple poor passes’.
Kaynak went on to say that it was ‘not a performance to suggest he’s the long-term solution at six for Arsenal.
With a contract expiring in 2025, we’d be inclined to agree. Reports in recent months have suggested that Partey may be on his way out, which would not be surprising given his recent performances. Will we ever see him wear Arsenal colours again? It feels implausible, especially in a competitive match.
