Draymond Green, a star player for the Golden State Warriors, expressed his dissatisfaction with the team’s need to participate in the play-in tournament to secure a spot in the playoffs. However, he acknowledged the positive impact it has had on the NBA.
In an episode of The Draymond Green Show, Green openly stated, “I hate the play-in, just so you all know. I absolutely hate it.” However, he quickly added, “It’s the best thing ever created. If you look at the play-in and what it’s done for basketball, it’s the best thing ever created.”
The Warriors concluded the regular season in the 10th position in the Western Conference with a 46-36 record. To advance, they must defeat the ninth-seeded Sacramento Kings and then face the loser of the No. 7-8 matchup between the New Orleans Pelicans and Los Angeles Lakers for a chance to secure the No. 8 seed.
Green elaborated on his thoughts, emphasizing how the play-in tournament has heightened the level of competition in the NBA, particularly in the latter stages of the regular season. He stated, “Since the NBA has added the play-in, it’s taken the last month and a half of the season to a totally different level. Like, totally different.” Despite his personal dislike for the play-in format and his team’s current seeding, Green acknowledged the excitement and intensity it brings, expressing his admiration as both a basketball player and a fan, saying, “So, I hate the play-in. I especially hate being the 10 seed. But as much as I hate it, as a basketball player, as a basketball fan, this play-in is nuts, and you gotta love it.”
