On Monday, Kristaps Porzingis became the fourth player from Boston to win Player of the Week, helping the team create NBA history. The 7-foot-3 center made history by teaming up with Jayson Tatum, Derrick White, and Jaylen Brown to become the first quartet of teammates to win Player of the Week honors in the same season since the title was established in 1979–1980.
No other NBA club has had more than two players receive the award during the entire campaign, but the Celtics have now had three winners in the last five weeks.
KP has won the award four times in his career; this is the first time he has done so since the week of January 2, 2023, when he was a member of the Washingtоn Wizards.
During a four-game span from April 1 to April 7, he shot 65.9 percent from the field and 63.6 percent from long range, and his averages were 19.8 points, 10.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 3.0 blocks, and 1.5 steals per game. He finished the week with three consecutive double-doubles and two five-block performances.
Let’s now review each of those four performances, which ended with victories for the C’s.
April 1st, Charlotte
In the first game of the week, Porzingis took on the Charlotte Hornets in the last game of a six-game road trip, finishing with 20 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and one block in 30 minutes of play. Despite having the fewest rebounds of the week, he had the most assists (5 assists, tied for second most overall) out of all of him. In Boston’s 118-104 victory at Spectrum Center, KP made 6-of-10 field goals, 7-of-8 free throws, and finished with a plus-11 rating.
Oklahoma City on April 3
Wednesday night against one of the top teams in the West, Porzingis put on his most outstanding performance of the week and among his finest of the season. He explоded for 27 points, a season-high tying 12 rebounds, four assists, five blocks, and one steаl in 31 minutes of turnover-free play against the Oklahoma City Thunder. He also shot 11 of 14 from the field and 3 of 3 from beyond the arc. KP became the first player in franchise history to have at least 10 rebounds, five blocks, and three 3-pointers in a game during the 135-100 victory. Along with Robert Parish, he became the second Celtic to ever record at least 27 points, 12 rebounds, and five blocks. This game was recognized by Basketball Reference as his second-best season-long performance; ironically, his previous game against the Thunder on January 2 at the top of the list saw him record 34 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks.
Sacramento on April 5
Porzingis continued to play with great efficiency into the Sacramento Kings game on Friday night. The seasoned center scored twenty points in twenty minutes on seven of ten field goals, two of two long-range baskets, and four of four free-throw attempts. During the 101-100 victory, he also pulled down 11 rebounds, distributed two assists, stole two baskets, and blocked two shots.
April 7 vs. Portland: In 27 minutes of a 124-107 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers, KP recorded 12 points, 10 rebounds, two assists, three steals, and five blocks. It was his second straight stat-stuffing performance of the week. Porzingis recorded his sixth five-block performance of the year, his second in the previous three contests. In addition, it was his third double-double in a row, the most he’s had since the 2020–21 Dallas Mavericks season.
