Brentford 1-1 Manchester United Player Ratings – Woeful attacking, Too many drawbacks, Ten Hag had to be fired

Manchester United and Brentford drew 1-1 at the Gtech Community Stadium tonight. Here are our player ratings for the game:

Andre Onana 7.5- Brentford continued coming, and only Onana’s saves and Brentford’s wastefulness kept the game scoreless. At least one player seemed to have completely turned the corner.

Diogo Dalot 5- Uncertain in possession as United were under pressure for the majority of the first half. He did his best in defence, but their numerical superiority made things difficult.

Raphael Varane (6- Was handled Brentford’s threat admirably with several last-ditch interventions until, to no one’s surprise, he was injured and replaced at halftime.

Victor Lindelof 6- Toney’s physicality provided him with a proper game, but he performed admirably, with a potentially goal-saving block to deny him an opportunity being a highlight. Went out injured in the second half.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka 3- Performance against Liverpool was a false dawn. Looked like a deer in headlights in an unfamiliar left-back position. Slow to react to Brentford’s equaliser.

Kobbie Mainoo was outmanned in midfield as McTominay embarked on one of his usual offensive exploits. He is now being targeted by the opposition, and how he handles this will determine the next stage of his development.

Scott McTominay 3: Did he score? No. So he was horrible. That’s pretty much why he’s on the team; he can’t do anything else well in or out of possession.

Alejandro Garnacho 5- Would have done something if United had possession for more than 30 seconds at a time. Effort is not missing.

Bruno Fernandes 6- Started well with a good counter-attack pass, but that was his only contribution as Brentford dominated proceedings.

Marcus Rashford 2- Personifies United’s overall shortcomings in that he consistently appears to be lacking in effort, decision-making, and a soft mentality when things don’t go his way. A true disasterclass, and not his first this season.

Rasmus Hojlund 4- Can’t really fault a striker when the team barely has the ball, but he missed a good opportunity and was otherwise anonymous.

Substitutes:

Harry Maguire 5- Struggled to keep up with Toney, Wissa, and Mbeumo’s moves, and was continually dragged out of position. Clumsy.

Antony 5- No recurrence of Liverpool’s heroics, which some would argue was the exception and this was the norm. With the exception of one speculative shot, it was ineffective.

Casemiro 5- His first contribution was giving the ball away, and he didn’t improve much after that.

Mason Mount, United’s No. 7, scored the first “United No. 7” goal of his career late in the game. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the winner.

Manager Erik ten Hag (4- Thomas Frank’s three-at-the-back system thoroughly outmanoeuvred him, and he left the players to fend for themselves rather than being aggressive in his game management.
