Manchester United are poised to split ways with midfielder Sofyan Amrabat after his season-long loan from Fiorentina.
The Moroccan international joined the Red Devils on transfer deadline day last summer. The hierarchy paid a €10 million loan charge to reach a deal with La Viola.
As part of the agreement, United has the option of signing him permanently for €20 million plus €5 million in add-ons.
Amrabat has barely impressed in the Red Devils shirt thus far, and Calciomercato now claims that his prospects of staying with the club next season have ‘already evaporated’.
As a result, he is largely expected to return to Fiorentina and may be sold to another Italian club.
Juventus is said to be interested in the Moroccan star, but would prefer an initial loan.
Amrabat’s current contract expires in the summer of 2025. If Fiorentina decides to loan him out to the Bianconeri, they may have to negotiate a short-term contract extension.
Amrabat’s loan stay at United ended in disaster.
The 27-year-old joins United with high expectations after playing for Morocco in the 2022 World Cup.
He worked quite hard and recovered balls quickly. He was expected to compete fiercely with Casemiro for United’s number six spot.
However, nothing of that nature has occurred. With the emergence of Kobbie Mainoo, Amrabat has spent the majority of the league season on the bench.
Casemiro is now out with a hamstring injury, thus Amrabat is unlikely to get a start. Mainoo is currently the unquestioned starter under manager Erik ten Hag.
In recent months, the Dutchman has also shown a preference for Scott McTominay. Mason Mount, who has recovered from a calf injury, should receive plenty of playing time in the season’s final stretch.
As a result, Amrabat has no future with the club.
During the World Cup finals in Qatar, Morocco’s head coach Walid Regragui described Amrabat as a ‘world-class’ player, but he has looked like a shell of himself at United.
Amrabat has failed to adjust to the pressure of the Premier League. A return to Serie A appears to be the best option, given the league’s tactical nature and lack of intensity.
