Manchester United have reportedly put together a four-man shortlist of Erik ten Hag successors ahead of a probable management transition at Old Trafford.
The 54-year-old recently achieved 100 matches in command of the Red Devils, having joined from Dutch heavyweights Ajax before the start of the 2022-23 season.
Ten Hag had a productive first season in Manchester, helping the club re-enter the Champions League and win the EFL Cup final against Newcastle United at Wembley.
However, the Dutchman has struggled to lead his club to comparable heights this season, with United currently sitting sixth, nine points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa.
According to The Mirror, Manchester United has developed a list of four managers who might potentially replace Ten Hag ahead of the 2024-25 season.
According to the article, the Red Devils had previously planned to name Gareth Southgate as their top candidate to take over at Old Trafford next season.
Following a minority acquisition of the club, INEOS billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe is now in charge of football operations at Manchester United and will decide Ten Hag’s fate.
With Southgate’s current tenure as Three Lions manager ending at the end of the calendar year, the Red Devils are reportedly being obliged to examine alternatives.
One of United’s secondary options is former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel, who will leave his position as Bayern Munich manager at the end of the current season.
The Bavarian giants sit 10 points behind surprise Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen, with Tuchel’s team on track to lose the German title for the first time since 2012.
Another coach attracting Manchester United’s attention is Portuguese Ruben Amorim, who is heading Sporting Lisbon in the Primeira Liga title chase against fierce rivals Benfica.
Roberto De Zerbi, who led Brighton & Hove Albion to the European stage for the first time this season, is also a prospective candidate for the Old Trafford post.
De Zerbi, an Italian manager who has been working with Graham Potter on the South Coast since late 2022, is also being connected to the soon-to-be vacated position at Liverpool.
Another candidate for the Manchester United position is Zinedine Zidane, who has extensive experience managing some of football’s top talents, having led Real Madrid to three Champions League victories.
