Victor Lindelof and Sweden’s new era under coach Jon Dahl Tomasson got off to the worst conceivable start with a crushing defeat against Portugal.
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes had a fantastic game, scoring and assisting, but Lindelof, United’s Swedish captain, had a disaster.
Tomasson cast doubt on the defender’s future as his country’s leader, claiming that he would have to reassess all of his options once in charge.
However, the centre back had good news when it was announced a few days ago that he would stay captain.
Tomasson elaborated on his decision, saying, “It’s a role he’s used to.” He’s a player that accepts responsibility, plays for a big club, and is always thinking about the team.”
Unfortunately, that was the only bright spot in the Scandinavians’ terrible performance, which demonstrated why they will not compete in this summer’s Euros tournament.
Portugal triumphed 5-2 despite having 13 shots each, with the home team having eight on target to the away side’s six.
The Swedes also had less ball possession, with 45% to Portugal’s 55%.
From a United standpoint, Lindelof had a nightmare of a game, playing the entire 90 minutes in a team that conceded five goals.
Sofascore awarded him a 5.8 for his night’s work, citing an extremely lethargic performance.
The 29-year-old made three clearances and one interception, but that was the extent of his defensive play.
He won zero ground and aerial duels in the encounter, an astounding record that demonstrates how difficult it was for him to make an impact against the Portuguese attackers.
The Swede was far stronger on the ball, though, and had an astounding 93% pass accuracy, with 43 of his 46 passes finding their intended target.
He was also involved on the ball, having 51 touches but failing on one long ball effort.
Fortunately, it was only a friendly, so the outcome or performance has no long-term implications, but it is a disappointing way to begin the Tomasson era.
Blågult and Lindelof will attempt to improve their performance against Albania at home on Monday night.
