Bruno Fernandes, Manchester United’s captain, played brilliantly for Portugal in a 5-2 friendly victory over Sweden yesterday night.
The 29-year-old has been an important player for his country for many years. He was selected from the starting lineup by manager Roberto Martinez yesterday.
Fernandes played the complete 90 minutes at Estadio Dom Afonso Henriques. He scored Portugal’s third goal with a spectacular late dash into the box.
The United star assisted Bruma in the 57th minute. Aside from his goals, Fernandes completed 100% of his dribbles.
The hardworking midfielder also secured three ground duels and two tackles. He had 83 percent pass accuracy and delivered three long balls.
Martinez made multiple adjustments to the starting lineup. Cristiano Ronaldo and other key players were rested for the home friendlies.
Fernandes was one of four outfield players, along with Bernardo Silva, Ruben Dias, and Joao Palhinha, who played the entire 90 minutes against Sweden.
Knowing his temperament, the Red Devils captain will be eager to start against Slovenia, but fans will be praying that the midfielder is rested.
Fernandes was knocked out of the FA Cup quarterfinal versus Liverpool before the international break. He played defense in extra time.
Hopefully, he will start on the bench for the next international friendly. United need him to be in peak physical condition for the last stretch of the season.
The club is now nine points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa in the Premier League, with one game in hand. They are six points behind fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur.
United have a superior schedule on paper than their league opponents, but they will need to go on a long winning streak to beat them to the final Champions League spot.
