PGMOL has explained why Liverpool did not receive a penalty in the final minutes of their Premier League encounter against Manchester City.
The Reds might have gained a critical three points in the title fight and grabbed the lead over Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.
At Anfield, the points were split. After John Stones’ goal, Alexis MacAllister’s penalty kick in the second half tied the game, and the home team had numerous opportunities to score as they dominated the second half.
The Reds claimed that in the final minute of stoppage time, they should have been handed another penalty kick. Jérémy Doku’s high boot hit Mac Allister in the chest, prompting an extended VAR check.
The game concluded quickly after VAR official Stuart Atwell decided to affirm Michael Oliver’s decision made on the field. However, the decision enraged the fans, and at full time, Jürgen Klopp confronted the referee.
According to the ECHO, PGMOL justified the decision with the following statement: “VAR said that Doku played the ball.”
However, veteran referee Mike Dean, who was part of Sky Sports’ commentary team, thought the City winger was exceedingly fortunate.
“It is a massive decision for the VAR,” Dean stated before the decision was announced. “He got a tiny touch on the ball, but the follow-through hit him squarely in the rib cage.” I wouldn’t be surprised if they showed the referee on the TV.”
A high-quality contest that demonstrated the class of both sides will be remembered by a contentious moment in the end.
Even though it appeared that Doku had the ball first, he was out of control with his challenge and was fortunate to avoid punishment for it.
A draw appeared to be a fair outcome in the end, as Manchester City dominated the first half and Liverpool outperformed in the second.
