Manchester United have found a new right-wing regular in Alejandro Garnacho, who led the team to a 2-0 win over Everton at the weekend. The 19-year-old winger started for the 24th time in a row, winning both penalties with quickness, quick feet, and cunning to defeat Sean Dyche’s lowly visitors at Old Trafford.
Garnacho just became a constant fixture in United’s first squad under Erik ten Hag last season, having made his debut the previous season.
Few anticipated him to become an unstoppable force ahead of the Dutchman’s £86 million signing Antony in the pecking order.
United have struggled to find a consistent right-winger since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure in 2013, with failed purchases and improvised solutions filling the void.
But Garnacho has the potential to change that, becoming the first established right-winger with title-winning ability at Old Trafford since Nani.
The Argentine rose to prominence as a left winger, scoring 23 goals and assisting 12 times in 82 youth and senior matches.
However, after playing to the right, Garnacho has eight goals and seven assists in only 20 appearances.
The United No. 17 has many similarities to Nani, who wore the same number throughout his successful tenure at Old Trafford.
His directness is a valuable asset, and his pace and quick feet are frequently too much for opponents to handle, as seen by his penalties against Everton on Saturday.
Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand played and had great success alongside Nani at United, and both have appeared as pundits.
Rooney praised Garnacho’s performance, even claiming he was the Red Devils’ player of the season thus far.
“I think you find with young players when they pick the ball up, they’re always very direct, but that works really well for him so often,” Rooney was quoted as saying by TNT Sports.
“It was poor on Godfrey’s part to give away the penalty, but for me, Garnacho was the one who made everything happen tonight.
“He was the best player on the field.” His off-ball work rate is excellent, and he is never reluctant to put in the effort.
“He will make mistakes, as every player does, especially at his age, but he is still learning, and what he has is passion and hunger, which any fan wants to see in a player.
“So I’ve been quite impressed with him this season, and I believe he will be a future star. I believe his production can improve; he has the capability to do so.
“So, hopefully, over the next few years, we’ll see those go up, but he’s probably been Manchester United’s best player this season.”
Garnacho could have added a goal and an assist to his two penalty wins, but he disappointed some supporters with his lack of decisiveness in the final third.
Nani was guilty of the same but still found ways to influence games, and it is not unreasonable to believe that Garnacho’s potential is much higher.
