Raphael Varane, Manchester United’s centre-back, performed admirably in the 3-1 Premier League derby defeat to Manchester City.
The Red Devils endured their second consecutive league loss on Sunday, but there were some positives to take away from the Etihad Stadium.
Marcus Rashford responded to criticism by hitting a sensational long-range goal in the eighth minute. He could’ve easily scored two more.
Meanwhile, Kobbie Mainoo was as reliable as ever from the center of the park. The adolescent won 100% of his ground duels and stood tall against Rodri.
Varane had another great defensive performance. He kept the City attack at bay with as many as nine clearances, losing possession only three times.
He had one forgettable moment against Haaland in the first half, but the World Cup winner was solid at the back, with a 90% pass accuracy and 100% aerial duels.
United should negotiate a new deal for Varane
Varane’s current £350,000-a-week deal ends at the end of June, and United’s leadership has decided not to trigger a one-year extension clause.
There are no talks planned at this moment, but we believe the club should offer him a new long-term contract with a modest pay decrease.
On his day, the £34 million acquisition is unquestionably one of the best in the world. His fitness record may not be ideal, but he is one of United’s best centre-backs.
Hopefully, contract talks will advance in the next weeks. Jonny Evans, who has outperformed expectations, may potentially be in line for a new contract.
The 36-year-old looked solid alongside Varane at the heart of the defensive before being substituted after an hour due to an injury.
