Manchester United’s prospects of qualifying for the Champions League appear to be fading after their defeat to Fulham over the weekend.
The Red Devils sit eight points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa, and the FA Cup is their last chance to win silverware. INEOS, the new minority stakeholders, are determined to return the club to the top tier of English football and are preparing a significant revamp both behind the scenes and on the pitch.
A new CEO is expected to come in the summer, and Dan Ashworth’s appointment as Sporting Director is just a question of time. A recruitment manager and a technical director are also on their way.
On the pitch, manager Erik ten Hag’s position is far from secure, and Sir Jim Ratcliffe is also planning a huge summer clearout, which the Glazers should have approved a long time ago.
Is Pellistri out?
For far too long, underperforming stars or players not in the manager’s plans were kept on in the hopes of recouping a reasonable amount. However, everything did not go as planned, and United is now one of the market’s lowest sellers.
According to Football Insider, Facundo Pellistri is one of several players whose heads are on the chopping block.
“Sources told Football Insider that Manchester United will attempt to trade on-loan player Facundo Pellistri permanently this summer.
“It is believed that the Red Devils will sanction the 22-year-old’s departure if they receive what they deem to be an acceptable offer.”
Despite an obvious void on the right wing, the Dutch manager had little faith in the Uruguayan, who made only three appearances in all competitions before being loaned out to Granada.
With Amad Diallo and Omari Forson still at the club, as well as Antony, it appears that the Uruguay international will struggle to establish himself as a permanent fixture in the foreseeable future.
The Spanish team was keen to include a condition that would make the loan agreement permanent, but United refused. This could have been a tactic to sell him for a higher price in the summer if he impressed during his six months in Spain.
United expects a healthy profit
The Uruguay international has made three starts for his loan club, scoring and assisting against Barcelona, but his future appears to be away from Old Trafford.
If United can recuperate more than they paid for him in 2020, when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was in charge, a summer sale appears likely. United signed him from Penarol for €8.5 million, and the 22-year-old is presently valued at €10 million by Transfermarkt.
“The agreement, which demanded that Granada cover the attacker’s full salaries, apparently did not include a provision for making his relocation permanent.
“This will allow United to explore options for his departure and they are keen to make a profit on the reported £9 million they paid Uruguayan side Penarol in 2020.”
Despite his success on the international scene, Pellistri has never been given a chance at United, and parting ways would be the best outcome for both sides at this point.
Given his age, potential, and international pedigree, United, with its solid structure, are likely to profit handsomely from the winger’s departure.
