I consider dunking an art. I believe I had more in the tank than shown.” Jaylen Brown of the Boston Celtics dunks over Donovan Mitchell at the NBA basketball All-Star weekend in Indianapolis on Saturday, Feb. 17, 2024.
Celtics player Jaylen Brown wants another shot at the Slam Dunk Contest title after finishing second at the 2024 All-player Game in Indianapolis.
Brown told reporters on Thursday before Boston’s away game against the Bulls that he would participate in the gravity-defying display again in 2025 if given the chance.
“If nobody else cares to do it, (expletive) it, I’ll do it again,” Brown told MassLive.com’s Souichi Terada. “I don’t care. People like memes. I believe dunking is an art. I think I had more in the tank than shown. Perhaps I could do better. I enjoyed it.”
Brown, the first All-Star player to compete in Slam Dunk since Victor Oladipo in 2018, lost to incumbent champion Mac McClung on Saturday.
Brown honoured Dorchester native and NBA hopeful Terrence Clarke by wearing his Brewster Academy jersey for his first final-round dunk.
The LED court at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis included an image of Clarke, who died in a vehicle аccident before the 2021 NBA Draft.
“Terrence was like my little bro,” Brown told reporters. “Definitely Boston-related. I wаnted meaning in all I did. I wаnted everything to have a message, and I think I did that tonight.”
Brown also slammed with his left hand while wearing a Michael Jackson-esque white glove and paid respect to Dee Brown’s “no look” dunk by slamming a Jayson Tatum feed over content creator Kai Cenat.
Brown said on Instagram that he meant to show off Dee Brown’s “no-look” manoeuvre mid-air, but he couldn’t do it until after he landed.
“I wasn’t trying to do anything crаzy,” Brown said Thursday. Everything I wаnted to accomplish was about gimmicks and showmanship—put on a show. People didn’t care about that.
They wаnted you to go twice between the legs. I think the dunk contest should be more about making a show and creating hype. However, that has changed. People only want a great dunk.”
