LeBron James recently celebrated the opening of the I Promise School in Akron, Ohio. The school is a partnership between the LeBron James Family Foundation and Akron Public Schools, designed to provide education and support to students facing difficult circumstances. Initially, the school will enroll 240 third- and fourth-grade students, with plans to expand to include first- and second-grade classes in 2019, and eventually offer classes from first through eighth grade by 2022.
LeBron James, a native of Akron, chose to open the school in his hometown because he understands the challenges that young students face in the community. He spoke about his personal connection to the students, stating that he knows the streets they walk and the trials they go through. He emphasized the importance of providing structure and showing that someone cares, as these students have dreams and aspirations just like anyone else.
The students were selected based on their academic performance, with administrators examining reading data to identify those who were behind in reading skills. More than 120 students met the criteria, and a random selection process was used to determine who would attend the school.
The I Promise School will have an extended school year, running from July 30 to May 17, 2019. School days will also have extended hours, starting at 9 a.m. and ending at 5 p.m.
During the opening ceremony, LeBron James expressed his gratitude to Michele Campbell, the director of his foundation, for her role in making the school a reality. He also thanked the city’s school system and sponsors who supported the project. James emphasized that Akron will always be home to him, regardless of where he plays basketball.
Michele Campbell, speaking to USA Today, mentioned that while the students may not become the next LeBron James on the basketball court, the goal is for them to become the best version of themselves in their chosen passions and dreams in life.
The opening of the I Promise School represents LeBron James’ commitment to giving back to his community and providing educational opportunities for young students in Akron.
