Sending Facundo Pellistri on loan to a team near the bottom of the Spanish League table that is not known for scoring goals was always a risky decision.
After his debut for Granada, that question is one step closer to being an actuality.
Pellistri made his debut start for his new team, playing 63 minutes against Las Palmas, the majority of which were spent effectively as a right-back.
Incredibly, he managed to complete only seven passes in 63 minutes.
Given that he had 30 ball touches, the Uruguayan’s whole game was essentially a “receive ball, lose ball” scenario.
He lost control a record 11 times and attempted only two dribbles, one of which was successful.
Las Palmas, although being far from dominant in La Liga, finished with more than 70% possession.
It is hardly an ideal training environment for a growing winger looking to polish his attacking skills.
Pellistri did accomplish five tackles, but if Erik ten Hag and the club wanted him to focus on that aspect of the game, he is playing in the incorrect position.
Overall, Pellistri played a scrappy game, and his effort and commitment were admirable, but the club is simply not set up for attackers to thrive.
There could be extenuating circumstances, as his club was reduced to 10 men in the 20th minute following Kamil Piatkowski’s red card.
However, observing the game until he was subbed off, it appeared to be another ill-conceived loan that would do more harm than good to the player’s growth and market worth.
Pellistri’s situation will not improve as Granada flies away to face Barcelona on February 11.
