Bruno Fernandes believes Marcus Rashford can manage the pressure of playing for Manchester United, after the controversial striker scored in his team’s 4-3 victory over Wolves.
The England forward returned to Erik ten Hag’s starting lineup at Molineux after accepting responsibility for what has been described as a 12-hour tequila binge that resulted in him missing training and last Sunday’s win over Newport due to illness.
Ten Hag was hesitant to speak about Rashford after the win, but United captain Fernandes urged the 26-year-old to overcome his misdemeanour.
‘Marcus has been the same; this is what he is capable of,’ Fernandes explained. ‘This is what he needs to do. This season has not been ideal for everyone, including Marcus, but we know that some players face more criticism than others.
‘Everyone has something to prove, including Marcus, because of the recent headlines or whatever he has done in the media. Everyone has to participate in games. Marcus is not the only one on the pitch.
‘You must do the task. Marcus scored a terrific goal; we know his abilities and what he can provide to the squad.
‘Marcus understands what it takes to be a United player more than I do since he’s been here his entire life. I believe he is the most capable of dealing with such situations.
Ten Hag praised young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, who capped a superb performance with the stoppage-time winner, but was disappointed to see his side fall behind 3-3 after leading 3-1.
He went on to say, “His progress is wonderful to see.” I have mixed feelings about the win because we need to correct some of the team’s faults. But then you witnessed the team’s perseverance, which demonstrates that the character in the dressing room is correct and the atmosphere is extremely excellent.
Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund put United ahead 2-0, and after Pablo Sarabia’s penalty, Scott McTominay restored the visitors’ two-goal advantage. Max Kilman and Pedro Neto balanced that out, and Wolves appeared to be on track for a point until Mainoo’s late strike.
Wolves manager Gary O’Neil stated: ‘We seem a genuinely good team at times, and we just need to keep trying to develop.’
