In a game played against a backdrop of controversy surrounding Marcus Rashford, the England international made headlines for all the right reasons as Manchester United won dramatically at Molineux.
Just five minutes in, Rashford demonstrated his devastating form in front of goal, scoring from the edge of the box to give United the lead.
Rashford found repeated success connecting up with a recovering Luke Shaw on the left wing, and the full-back delivered an inch-perfect ball to Rasmus Hojlund as the visitors increased their lead.
Wolves responded with a penalty goal from Pablo Sarabia, before Scott McTominay briefly restored United’s two-goal lead. The hosts maintained their pressure until the end, when Max Kilman halved the deficit before Pedro Neto equalized in stoppage time.
There was still one more twist to come, and Kobbie Mainoo sent the travelling supporters into ecstasy with his finessed strike, which propelled United to victory.
Mail Sport’s Chris Wheeler was on hand at Molineux to assess players’ performances.
Manchester United
Andre Onana – 6.5
He did what was needed of him in the first half but appeared far from secure after the break. Martinez’s goal line clearing after the restart would be greatly appreciated.
Luke Shaw – 7
In his first Premier League start since Christmas, the England international demonstrated why he is so important to Erik ten Hag’s team. Rashford and I worked extremely well together.
Lisandro Martinez – 7
With the Argentinian, United are a far superior defensive squad. Early in the second half, he shown expert initiative by denying Max Kilman a definite goal.
Raphael Varane – 6.5
Came close to scoring United’s third goal in the first half and was consistently good. Should have done better with Neto’s late equalizer.
Diogo Dalot – 6.5
With Shaw taking greater offensive responsibility, the Portugal international remained focused on thwarting the hosts frequently down the right side.
Casemiro – 6.5
Had two excellent chances to score from set pieces that went wide, but was solid overall. Was unlucky to give away the penalty that resulted in Sarabia’s goal.
Kobbie Mainoo – 7
A night he won’t forget. Just days after scoring his first senior goal for the club, Mainoo duplicated the feat in the league, beating many players and blasting home to secure three points at the death.
Marcus Rashford – 7.
With the controversy surrounding his weekend, he needed to put on a strong performance this evening, and he lost no time demonstrating his abilities with the early goal.
Bruno Fernandes – 8
Fernandes had a true captain’s performance, pulling the reins as United eventually won. Assisted Scott McTominay on his third goal.
Alejandro Garnacho – 7
The 19-year-old put in a relentless display, contributing significantly to United’s offensive efforts. There were some occasions where the quality was lacking.
Rasmus Hojlund – 7.
After what must have felt like an age to score his first Premier League goal, the Dane is off to a great start. Clearly benefited by Shaw’s offensive moves.
