Kyle Walker has claimed that he almost moved to Bayern Munich this summer to ‘avoid’ the revelations surrounding his extramarital affair.
The Manchester City full-back said that he signed a £15 million transfer to the Bundesliga club in July, despite a rough period in his personal life.
Walker, who is married to Annie, admitted to making “idiot choices and idiot decisions” when it came to fathering a kid with another woman.
The 33-year-old has apologized to his wife, who is expecting their fourth child together.
He told The Sun: “I attempted to flee. Did I wish to leave the city? No, I didn’t. We are currently the best squad in the world. But it was an opportunity to go away from England and the media coverage I would receive.
“I knew the clock was ticking. I was pretty close to moving. We were having chats. I was going to a fantastic club, a huge club. But in the end, I couldn’t leave. If this happens while I’m in Germany, Annie leaves, leaving me alone in Germany.
“My children would not be around the corner, where I could see them. There is sorrow and sadness at the time, but I can go home, get the kids to school, and take my little boy to football.”
Walker commended Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola for staying by him, saying, “He had no idea what was going on. I didn’t want to inform him because I didn’t want him to assume I wasn’t mentally present.
“I can’t thank him enough for the understanding and belief he’s shown in me through four years.”
The England player, who was selected captain by Gareth Southgate for a match against North Macedonia last year, stated that he had also received encouragement from him.
“For your national team manager to reach out in a time of need goes beyond football,” he went on to say.
