Andre Onana got into an altercation with Samuel Eto’o after the Manchester United goalkeeper was dropped for Cameroon’s critical Africa Cup of Nations group game on Tuesday.

Onana missed Cameroon’s AFCON opener because he chose to continue playing for United and didn’t join the national squad until the tournament began last week.

The United goalkeeper was reinstated to the starting lineup for Cameroon’s second group game, but he struggled as his team was defeated 3-1 by Senegal.

He was then benched for Cameroon’s final Group C game against Gambia, as head coach Rigobert Song chose to give Fabrice Ondoa, Onana’s cousin, his second start of the tournament.

According to reports, Onana was enraged at being dropped from the starting lineup and was involved in a fight with Eto’o, the president of Cameroon’s Football Federation, prior to the game.

According to a source close to the Cameroon squad, Song made the decision to replace goalkeepers and reinstate Ondoa as No.1 after consulting with team members.

‘He only heard out this morning that he wouldn’t be playing. He had a verbal fight with Eto’o, but he did not respond.

‘Onana lost his rage on his own before settling down and staying with the others to face his fate.

Cameroon finished second in Group C, defeating Gambia 3-2, and will face Nigeria in the last 16 on Saturday.

Onana has already faced criticism for joining Cameroon’s squad late for their AFCON campaign.

Former Arsenal, Tottenham, and Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor remarked last week that Onana showed little regard for Cameroon. I was a player like him, and despite being the most important player in my team, I never acted this way [on the day of the match].

‘The fact that this situation is occurring indicates that there is a problem, possibly within the federation.

‘He risks losing heavily since he has alienated Cameroonian supporters, as well as many African supporters and, likely, some members of the team.’
