According to Bob Myers, Steph Curry nearly traded from the west coast to the east coast in a stunning deal with the Boston Celtics.
The former Golden State Warriors general manager promptly laughed the concept out of his office as he sought to keep the famed three-point shooter.
The offer came from Myers’ mentor, who was the Celtics’ general manager at the time, as he described the number of proposals he had gotten for Curry’s services over the years.
“Look, I was never upset with anybody asking,” Myers told ESPN’s Woj Podcast. “Mining for trades is the task of a general manager.
“But [Danny] Ainge was the one who kept asking. I owe my career to Ainge, so I couldn’t be furious. ‘Return the favor, give me Curry’ (laughs). Everyone knew that was not going to happen, so it made for a good laugh.”
Ainge was well-known for orchestrating blockbuster trades, such as obtaining Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen from the Minnesota Timberwolves, who went on to win the NBA Championship the following year.
Ainge also handed Myers his big break in the administrative offices, launching a partnership and career that saw Myers named NBA Executive of the Year twice while the Warriors won four championships.
Myers left the Warriors in the summer of 2023 and currently works as an analyst for ESPN and an advisor to the Washington Commanders in the NFL.
