Manchester United are in ‘advanced negotiations’ to sign Atalanta center-back Giorgio Scalvini.
According to the French news outlet Les Bons Conceil Du Sports, the Italian might become the first signing of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s period at Old Trafford. United are planning to bring in a centre-back in 2024, despite uncertainty surrounding the futures of Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, and Jonny Evans.
Due to an ongoing injury crisis, manager Erik ten Hag has been forced to use a variety of different center-back pairings this season. Because United’s star center-back Lisandro Martinez has been out since September, the manager has had to find cover for the left-sided center-back position on a regular basis.
Scalvini, who is right-footed, has established himself as a regular fixture at Atalanta this season, making 22 games in all competitions. Despite being only 20, the Italian has made 77 first-team appearances for Atalanta so far in his career.
In addition to his ability as a center-back, the Italian can also play defensive midfield. His versatility makes him an appealing choice for any club.
Scalvini, who has 77 appearances for Atalanta, has also won seven senior caps for Italy. In October, he started their 3-1 loss to England at Wembley.
Meanwhile, United is thought to be facing ‘competition’ from Tottenham Hotspur for Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney. According to a report in the Evening Standard, Spurs are ‘likely to join the race’ for his signing.
The Riverside midfielder, who has flourished under former United star Michael Carrick, is apparently garnering interest from a number of Premier League clubs, including United. Over the previous year, the 21-year-old has grown from strength to strength, establishing himself as a crucial player in Carrick’s plans.
Despite their interest, Spurs are said to be holding off on signing him until the summer transfer window. Middlesbrough are ‘braced’ for offers for Hackney this month, according to the source, but will only sell him if they receive a’sensational’ deal.
