This year’s March Madness will showcase twin basketball stars who were raised by a single mother of three, working three jobs to support them.
Jenny Bennett, known for her strong work ethic, raised Caleb and Cody Martin, now 23 years old, in a single-wide trailer located in the small town of Coolme, North Carolina. Today, they have become two of the top basketball players on the University of Nevada team, which recently clinched the Mountain West Conference championship.
In an interview with CBS News, Bennett expressed that if she had the opportunity to start over, she would still choose to raise her boys by herself. Bennett became a mother to the twins at a young age while in a relationship with a man of a different race. When she informed her family about her pregnancy, they not only evicted her from their house but also left her to care for her children independently. Additionally, she had to confront hatred and criticism from unfamiliar individuals. Bennett shared with CBS News that someone even burned a cross in front of her house due to their prejudiced views on her family. “You just don’t understand why you feel the way you do,” she questioned. “How can someone be so meаn?”
“You worry about what will happen to your kids when you’re not there to protect them from people like this. It’s frightening. Very frightening.”
Bennett raised Cody, Caleb, and Raheem, along with their older brother Raheem, in a cramped 300-square-foot trailer. According to the Reno Gazette Journal, the trailer was elevated on gray blocks and often plagued by ant infestations.
The mother would occasionally prepare meals for her three children but refrain from eating herself. She would tell her kids that she wasn’t hungry, but the reality was that the family couldn’t afford enough food.
Caleb, in a 2017 interview with the Reno Gazette Journal, expressed his immense admiration for his mother and all the challenges she had overcome.
