‘Sackable Offence’: Erik ten Hag’s decision during Forest costed Man Utd’s points

Erik ten Hag did something that enraged Manchester United fans during their match against Nottingham Forest.

United went into the game needing a win to put a bow on a dreadful 2023 season. The Red Devils were eliminated from the Champions League in the group stages earlier this month and currently appear unlikely to qualify for next season’s competition.

The visit to the City Ground provided an opportunity for the Red Devils to build on their Boxing Day 3-2 victory over Aston Villa. However, they were unable to accomplish so, as the hosts won 2-1. However, it was after a poor first half from both teams that Ten Hag made a judgment that enraged United fans.

Ten Hag chose to replace Scott McTominay with popular star Kobbie Mainoo in an attempt to turn the game in his favor. It turned out to be a choice that was not well received by the club’s fans.

“Ten Hag out!” one admirer wrote. That is a horrible substitution!” As one person put it, “Ten Hag, I’m getting tired.” A third irritated bystander remarked, “That’s a sackable offense.”

Others agreed, and a fourth said, “Ten Hag has something fetish for Mctominay.” “How????” wrote another before him. Is he paying attention to the game? He’s paid millions to do things like this. “There’s no way, man.”

Despite the negative reaction from United fans, McTominay has been one of the club’s better players this season. The midfielder has personified the club’s old-school fight and has scored critical goals at crucial times.

The Scottish international has made 22 appearances in all competitions for the 13-time Premier League winners, including a cameo at Nottingham Forest. In that time, he has scored six goals and provided one assist.

McTominay’s arrival had no effect on United, who finished 2023 with two more crushing defeats. The Red Devils won thanks to goals from Nicolas Dominguez and Morgan Gibbs-White, who were shortly answered by Marcus Rashford.
