According to L’Equipe (today’s issue), Manchester United defender Raphael Varane is not interested in a move to Saudi Arabia despite his limited playing time this season.
This season, the World Cup winner has been a fixture on the bench. He started the game at first but was replaced by Harry Maguire due to an injury.
He was just reintroduced to the starting lineup, however he was unavailable against West Ham United at the weekend. Erik ten Hag stated that he was sick for the game.
According to L’Equipe, the Frenchman’s entourage has eliminated the possibility of him making a big-money move to Saudi Arabia in the near future.
The £42 million signing has struggled with fitness concerns this season, but he is claimed to be active on a daily basis and has been advising his younger teammates.
Varane’s fate may be decided next summer.
Earlier this season, Ten Hag made the surprising decision to bench Varane in favor of Harry Maguire.
The Dutchman suggested that the former Real Madrid star was not good enough for the left center-back position and instead chose Jonny Evans, Victor Lindelof, and Luke Shaw.
Varane proved the manager wrong with a man of the match performance in the same position against Liverpool earlier this month, but he was ruled out for the trip to West Ham.
The defender’s current contract is set to expire at the end of the season, but United have the option to extend it for another year. The clause is most likely to be activated by the club in the following days.
His fate will most likely be decided this summer. If he continues to excel and remains injury-free until the conclusion of the season, the club may consider renewing his contract. He could be sold otherwise.
