The Los Angeles Lakers unveiled a new banner in celebration of their triumph in the first-ever NBA In-Season Tournament. The banner, which is formed differently from their previous championship banners and is colored gold and black, represents their victory in the competition. The Lakers are tied with the Boston Celtics for the most NBA championship banners in the league with 17, but this latest addition highlights their performance in the In-Season Tournament.
Before a game against the New York Knicks, players, coaches, and team staff gathered at center court for a brief ceremony. After the tournament’s highlight reel was shown, a black curtain was lowered to unveil the new banner. The new banner, which represents their triumph in the tournament, is placed next to the five Minneapolis championship banners and to the left of the Lakers’ twelve Los Angeles title banners.
While there were varying reactions from the players, LeBron James—the team’s lone multiple champion—exhibited a comparatively composed demeanor throughout the ceremony. Coach of the Lakers, Darvin Ham, expressed his excitement about the banner, calling it “really, really cool” and highlighting how important the In-Season Tournament is becoming a bigger and more important event. To mark the event, the team also put in a brand-new floor decal in their tunnel.
On December 9, the Lakers defeated the Indiana Pacers 123-109 to win the In-Season Tournament championship. The Lakers’ players received a $500,000 bonus, while the Pacers’ players received a $200,000 bonus. LeBron James was voted the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
