Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo was one of the standout performances in the Red Devils’ goalless Premier League draw at Liverpool on Sunday.
Given the form of both clubs, the Red Devils entered the game as prospective underdogs, and many expected them to suffer their sixth consecutive defeat at Anfield.
United, on the other hand, had different plans and put on an outstanding defensive performance. Raphael Varane was named player of the match, although Mainoo was also outstanding in midfield.
The 18-year-old lined up in the center of the field with Sofyan Amrabat and was impressive with his decision-making, winning four duels and two tackles.
Mainoo also blocked three shots from Jurgen Klopp’s team and had an 89% passing accuracy. Only three times did the United wonderkid lose possession.
Manager Erik ten Hag stated after the game that Mainoo was fantastic with his’scanning’ from midfield and that he is a player who can’really harm’ opponents.
With the Anfield test, the teenager has proven his credentials as a senior player in our opinion, and Ten Hag now has another star in his line-up.
Earlier last month, we said the same thing about Scott McTominay. The Scot played slowly at Anfield as he adapted to the number 10 position in Bruno Fernandes’ absence.
He improved his performance in the second half, winning an amazing 12 duels.
Amrabat, on the other hand, had a night to forget. He won one of eight duels and lost possession on a whopping 16 occasions, with a pass accuracy of 64%.
With Fernandes due to return against West Ham United next weekend, we expect Mainoo to be paired in central midfield by McTominay, with Amrabat dropping.
