Raphael Varane, a Manchester United defender, was named man of the match in Sunday’s goalless Premier League stalemate with Liverpool.
The Red Devils were expected to have a difficult game against their arch-rivals at Anfield, and it was suggested that they could lose by a comfortable margin.
However, nothing of the sort occurred. United started the derby nervously, but they quickly regained their composure and were excellent defensively for the entire 90 minutes.
Varane, who started from the left center-back position, was instrumental in the outcome. The Frenchman cleared his lines brilliantly and was very strong aerially.
He produced a spectacular 15 clearances and won all four aerial duels (4/4). The 30-year-old also had three interceptions and two shots on goal blocked.
The World Cup winner definitely provided his greatest performance of the season, demonstrating that he can function easily from the left center-back position.
Varane demonstrates his point to manager Erik ten Hag
Earlier this season, the £42 million signing was benched in favor of Harry Maguire in the right center-back position.
Ten Hag stated that he is uneasy on the left side and thinks players such as Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, Victor Lindelof, and Jonny Evans are more suited for the position.
Many fans were taken aback by the manager’s unusual decision, and we are pleased that Varane has been reinstalled into the starting XI, albeit influenced by the injuries.
Varane proved to Louis van Gaal that he is a world-class player with a solid defensive performance yesterday. He should be a reliable starter from here on.
His future may be decided this summer. His current contract is set to expire in June 2024, but the club has the opportunity to extend it for another year through a clause in his contract.
