Just as the physio’s room at Old Trafford seemed to be emptying out, it became even busier this week as Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw both limped off the field against Bayern Munich in midweek.
Maguire will miss tomorrow’s Premier League game against Liverpool, but boss Erik ten Hag does not expect him to be out for long.
Anthony Martial is still out due to the illness that kept him out of Tuesday’s game, but Marcus Rashford is back.
Rashford is said to be suffering from Norovirus.
Shaw, too, has rapidly recovered from what appeared to be hamstring issues and is ready to play.
Victor Lindelof has not been mentioned by the club or in Ten Hag’s press conference, thus it is unknown whether he has recovered from the illness that has caused him to miss the last two games. We’re guessing he’s still unavailable.
Lisandro Martinez is back on the field after undergoing a second surgery for the same ankle issue that kept him out late last season, but he is still at least a couple of weeks away from playing competitive football.
Tyrell Malacia has suffered a minor setback in his recovery and will not be available until at least mid-January.
Ten Hag may choose Aaron Wan-Bissaka over Diogo Dalot at right back after United lost 7-0 in the identical encounter last season.
The experiment with Shaw at center defense appears to be over, so if Lindelof does not make it, Jonny Evans will partner Rapha Varane at center back and Shaw will play left back.
Sergio Reguilon is another possibility.
Ten Hag is expected to stick with Andre Onana in goal.
Mason Mount could be ready to return in midfield, but the bench is probably the only realistic possibility. Casemiro and Christian Eriksen have both been ruled out, while Bruno Fernandes has been suspended.
With that in mind, the most likely scenario is that Kobbie Mainoo replaces Bruno, with Scott McTominay moving up to an eight-ten role and Sofyan Amrabat holding alongside the 18-year-old. This reduces inventiveness but adds a bit more of a defensive wall in midfield.
Another contender to replace Fernandes is Hannibal, although his inexperience and fierce nature may not be well suited to the harsh Anfield environment.
With Martial absent and Rasmus Hojlund appearing jaded and lackluster, Rashford could be expected to play center forward, with Alejandro Garnacho remaining on the left wing and Antony on the right.
This would allow Rashford to make a statement against Liverpool, which might kickstart his season, while also allowing Hojlund to rest up and have the advantage of fresh legs if he comes off the bench in the second half.
If Amad Diallo does not play for the U21s today, he could return to the bench after a lengthy absence. On the wings, Facu Pellistri is an option, but Ten Hag has exiled Jadon Sancho.
Keeping this in mind, here is our expected lineup for tomorrow’s game:
