During their remarkable careers, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo will cross paths on the field once more.
It will also take place in Saudi Arabia at the beginning of 2019.
The team announced on Monday night that Messi’s Inter Miami will play in two preseason games during the Riyadh Season Cup.
On January 29, Inter Miami will play Al-Hilal, which has stars like Malcom, Kalidou Koulibaly, Aleksandar Mitrovic, Rúben Neves, Neymar (who is recuperating from knee surgery), and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.
Two of the top players in the game will square off three days later on February 1st when Messi’s Inter Miami and Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr clash.
Ever since Messi, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner and 2022 World Cup champion with Argentina, joined the MLS team this summer, Inter Miami has been driven to grow its brand internationally.
The games are scheduled ahead of Messi’s sophomore campaign and have been added to Inter Miami’s global preseason tour.
“This is yet another fantastic chance to build enduring relationships with ardent supporters. In a statement, Inter Miami CF Chief Business Officer Xavier Asensi said, “We are thrilled to meet new supporters in Saudi Arabia and hope people all over the world will be tuning in to see a pair of dream matches like these.”
Our squad will put itself to the test in these games, which will help us as the new season draws near. Chris Henderson, the Sporting Director and Chief Soccer Officer of Inter Miami, stated in the same statement, “We’re excited for our group to get up against teams with as much quality as Al-Hilal and Al Nassr.”
Almost three weeks have passed since Inter Miami said it would not be taking part in the Riyadh Season Cup.
The duel between Messi and Ronaldo may be the final opportunity for soccer fans worldwide to argue over who is the best player in the league.
Between them, Messi, 36, and Ronaldo, 38, have won 13 Ballon d’Or honors; Messi just took home his eighth, making him the player with the most. Ronaldo, with five Ballon d’Or, is next in line.
Furthermore, a clash between them at this point in their careers would only serve to fuel soccer fans’ never-ending argument over who the best player is.
MLS Cup: Ordering all 28 final matches
Earlier this year, Messi and Paris Saint-Germain defeated Ronaldo and a group of Saudi all-stars 5-4 in their last meeting. During the match, Messi and Ronaldo both scored goals.
On January 19, Inter Miami and the El Salvador national team will play at Estadio Cuscatlán in San Salvador.
Additionally, on February 4, Inter Miami will go to Hong Kong to play the Hong Kong Team, which is made up of the top players from the Hong Kong First Division League.
With games in their MLS regular season schedule plus competitions like the Concacaf Champions Cup, Leagues Cup, U.S. Open Cup, and MLS postseason (assuming Inter Miami qualifies), Messi and Inter Miami might have an exciting year in 2024.
Messi may also play for Argentina in the Copa America competition in 2024 and in further 2026 World Cup qualifying games.
