Erik ten Hag has revealed that Sergio Reguilon may return to Tottenham Hotspur in January due to a ‘break clause’ in his contract.
Ten Hag was plagued by injuries to preferred left-backs Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, so the Spaniard completed a season-long loan agreement with Manchester United in September. Since joining United, the 26-year-old has missed games due to injury and illness, but he has made 10 appearances for the team.
Shaw has returned to action after a muscular ailment, and Malacia is reaching full fitness after a protracted layoff due to a knee injury. Reguilon’s future at the club is now in doubt, despite the fact that he began Saturday’s home defeat against Bournemouth.
Ten Hag’s team suffered a horrific afternoon, losing 3-0 to the Cherries thanks to an atrocious performance. Prior to the game, the Dutch manager revealed that the former Real Madrid player’s future was uncertain.
He informed reporters after unveiling the ‘break clause’, “We have to make a final decision on Reguilon.” However, the Spurs are also involved in that discussion.”
In Reguilon’s absence, Destiny Udogie has established himself as Ange Postecoglou’s No. 1 left back. However, the Australian side is currently beset by a large injury list, so the possibility of increased squad depth is certain to appeal.
Reguilon joined Real Madrid’s senior squad in 2018, but was loaned out to Sevilla the following season after making 14 La Liga appearances. He won the Europa League there before moving to North London in September 2020 to play for Jose Mourinho.
But he was back on loan in Spain after two years, this time with Atletico Madrid. He returned in the summer, only to join United, whose contract may now be terminated.
Ten Hag is now considering a number of prospective departures in January. Following his first-team exile, Jadon Sancho is poised to depart the club, while Rafael Varane and Donny van de Beek have both been linked with moves abroad.
