Following Joel Matip’s season-ending injury, Liverpool are allegedly interested in signing Wolfsburg defender Maxence Lacroix.
The 23-year-old has been a regular for the German club in the first few months of the 2023-24 season, appearing in 12 Bundesliga games and scoring against Bayer Leverkusen in October.
Lacroix joined Wolfsburg from Sochaux in the summer of 2020 and has played 113 times for Die Wolfe, scoring four goals in all competitions.
Given his French nationality, competition for the centre-back to break onto the international stage has been intense, with the right-footed defender only able to play for his country’s Under-17s during his career to date.
Due to recent injury concerns, Liverpool head coach Jurgen Klopp may be forced to hasten his plans in the forthcoming January transfer window, according to The Sun.
According to the report, the German manager is a big fan of Wolfsburg defender Lacroix and hopes to bring him to the Premier League, preferably Anfield, in the new year.
Matip suffered an anterior cruciate ligament damage in Sunday’s seven-goal thriller against Fulham and could be out for the rest of the season.
As a result, the Reds are expected to bring in defensive reinforcements in January to replace the former Schalke centre-back, with Lacroix on the shortlist of candidates.
Wolfsburg are reportedly demanding at least £30 million for one of their first-choice defenders, with the player’s current contract at VOLKSWAGEN Arena expiring in 18 months.
Marc Guehi of Crystal Palace has also been linked with a January move to Liverpool, despite the fact that the England international would reportedly cost the Reds £50 million.
Another issue in any prospective Guehi sale is that Roy Hodgson’s team are unlikely to offload the defender in the middle of the season, with a transition more likely in the summer.
The 23-year-old is thought to have piqued Manchester United’s interest in recent months, but the player is said to be unwilling to consider a move to Old Trafford.
With Matip’s season on the line due to an ACL injury, Ibrahima Konate will be Virgil van Dijk’s teammate in Klopp’s favorite central-defensive pairing until at least January.
The Reds trimmed the distance to Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal to just two points with a simple win at bottom-placed Sheffield United on Wednesday night, and the Merseysiders travel to play Guehi and Crystal Palace at lunchtime on Saturday.
