One of the most intriguing seasons in Brazilian league history concluded on Wednesday, with the most stable team maintaining its title and the club that was home to the late Pelé being relegated for the first time.
Palmeiras tied 1-1 at Cruzeiro to win the Brazilian title for the 12th time. Endrick, 18, scored his 11th goal of the season to give Palmeiras an early lead, but Nikao equalized in the 80th minute at Belo Horizonte’s Mineirao Stadium.
Santos’ relegation after a 2-1 home loss to Fortaleza in January was yet another setback for the club at the stadium where Pelé’s funeral was held in January.
Palmeiras won the title this year, with striker Endrick, who is likely to join Real Madrid, hitting several vital goals and rival Botafogo blowing a 13-point lead in the rankings.
Atlético Mineiro and Flamengo, both of which had tiny prospects of capturing the title in the last round, were defeated. After both defeats, Luis Suárez’s Gremio finished second after a 3-2 win at Fluminense, with the Uruguayan striker scoring twice.
Palmeiras finished with two more points than Gremio, with 70. Botafogo finished sixth with 64 points after leading 31 of 38 rounds. The Rio club was defeated 3-1 by Internacional and finished the season with an 11-game losing streak.
Santos finished with 43 points, one less than Bahia, which defeated Atletico Mineiro 4-1, and two less than Vasco da Gama, who defeated Bragantino in another dramatic match.
In the 39th minute, Mario Sergio scored for the visitors. Messias equalized in the 58th minute, giving Santos optimism that they may relegate Vasco da Gama or Bahia. However, Juan Martin Lucero of Fortaleza scored from long range just before the final whistle.
The game was called off when Santos fans attempted to invade the pitch, forcing players to flee to the locker rooms.
