Jamie Carragher has slammed Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana for his performance this week against Galatasaray.
The Cameroon international had a nightmare night in Turkey during the Champions League. He made two gaffes that cost his team the game. Carragher described Onana’s performance as “unacceptable.”
Andre Onana of Manchester United is slammed by Jamie Carragher.
Manchester United paid £47.2 million to Inter Milan for Andre Onana in the summer (Sky Sports).
Last season, the 27-year-old enjoyed an outstanding season in Italy, helping the Nerazzurri reach the Champions League final.
Erik ten Hag was satisfied by Onana’s performances that he was the appropriate man for Manchester United, and the Red Devils let David de Gea leave and signed the Cameroonian in his place.
So far, the transfer has been a failure. Onana has already made numerous errors, the most recent of which occurred on Wednesday in Manchester United’s 3-3 tie with Galatasaray.
When asked about the blunders, Jamie Carragher slammed Onana, calling his performance “unacceptable.”
“Great goalkeepers turn defeats into draws and draws into narrow victories, especially at the biggest clubs,” he wrote in The Telegraph. The trick of being a world-class keeper for a team pursuing the biggest trophies is to do the little you need to do wonderfully well.
“Unfortunately for Onana, he was responsible for turning victories into draws and draws into defeats at the start of his United career.” United’s hazardous Champions League situation is a direct result of his mistakes. Onana cost the club both home and away against Galatasaray, and he was ineffective against Bayern Munich in the first group game. Yes, he saved a last-second penalties against Copenhagen at Old Trafford, but the multiple negatives outweighed the one positive.
“A Manchester United goalkeeper’s performance in Turkey was unacceptable.” You wouldn’t expect an under-18 goalkeeper to commit the simple handling error that led to Galatasaray’s second goal. If a youth goalkeeper was promoted and performed like Onana on Wednesday night, he would almost certainly never play for the first team again.
“Onana has cost United far too many soft goals.” The notion that the worst of his Old Trafford tenure was behind him has been dashed, and Wednesday was a massive step backwards. Onana has already earned a reputation as a liability. That will be difficult to overcome and reverse.”
For Manchester United, Onana must turn things around.
The most difficult aspect of being a goalie is that you rarely get away with mistakes.
Andre Onana has learned that more than ever this season, and the 27-year-old’s mistakes have grown in size since joining Manchester United.
The Cameroonian international has to get back on his feet as soon as possible. There is no doubt that he is a brilliant goalie, but if he does not stop making mistakes that cost his club, he will be moved on.
Manchester United will face Newcastle in their next game, which will be extremely challenging. It will be interesting to observe how Onana responds to his mistakes this week.
