‘This is not a personal issue’ – Ten Hag still supports Onana after serious errors

Erik ten Hag declined to criticize Andre Onana despite the Cameroon goalkeeper’s two errors leading to a 3-3 draw at Galatasaray on Wednesday, which ended Man’s hopes of advancing for the knockout rounds. United is slowly dissolving into thin air.

Despite the raucous environment at Rams Park, Manchester United lead 2-0 after 18 minutes on goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes, and 3-1 on Scott McTominay’s strike in the 55th minute. But Onana’s error nullified all of our efforts. He mishandled the ball into the net after a free kick from Hakim Ziyech in the 62nd minute, cutting the gap to 2-3 and allowing the hosts to cheer up and equalize 3-3 courtesy to a fantastic goal by Kerem Akturkoglu in the 71st minute.

The Cameroonian goalkeeper made a huge error on the second goal, as the ball from Ziyech’s free kick hit… Onana’s right elbow after a dive, bounced back, and went over the goal line. And, immediately before Ziyech’s first goal, also from a free kick, Onana moved to the left, behind Man.United’s frail defensive line. So, after going through the wall, Ziyech’s curling effort ended up in the net just where Onana had started.

Paul Scholes: Andre Onana mistakes make United team-mates nervous

“Onana is still fine,” declared coach Ten Hag after the game. “As I have stated, the matter is not personal. Individual blunders in football can, of course, make a difference, and you are responsible for them, but it is always about the team. We both win and lose as a team. This team is incredibly good; all of the guys deserve to play for Manchester United. I believe we performed admirably as a group. This team’s progress is visible. The game provided me with numerous opportunities. It was exciting to see many of the qualities I desire in my team, such as being proactive, dynamic, bold, and capable of scoring big goals.”
